Abstract
The aim of this research is to examine the factors affecting adoption of Takaful (Islamic Insurance) in the Maldives. Descriptive and explanatory research design was adopted in this research and a cross sectional survey methods using a survey questionnaire was used. The questionnaire was developed based on past literature and a pilot test was conducted to check normality, reliability and validity of the scale. The dependent variable used in this research was Adoption of Takaful Insurance. While the independent variables were Awareness, Relative Advantage, Compatibility, Social Influence and Attitude.The questionnaire contained 32 items with 7 point Likert scale, 1 being strongly disagree and 7 being strongly agree. A sample of 340 respondents in Male’, capital city of the Maldives were selected using convenient sampling. The collected data was analysed using descriptive means and regression through SPSS 21.This research found that Attitude and Compatibility have a positive and significant influence on Adoption of Takaful. However this research did not find any significant impact of Awareness, Relative Advantage and Social Influence on adoption of Takaful. This research is very beneficial for those who works in Insurance industry , especially in market where Muslims are dominant, such as Maldives. This research finding could be used to design their marketing campaigns and also allocating resources.
