dc.description.abstractThis study aims to examine the impact of board characteristics on a firm’s strengths in gaining and sustaining competitive performance which was measured using annual growth rate (profitability) or sustainable profit growth rate. The study has selected a sample of 20 listed companies across various sectors in Bursa Malaysia (Malaysia Stock Exchange Index). The range of data collected is based on the firm’s year-on-year growth ie, year-end 2016 results to the following year, 2017. Characteristics such as Board size, Board meeting, CEO duality, and Board tenure are indicators used in the evaluation of the impact on the firm’s profitability. To test the descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple linear regression, SPSS 18.0 was utilized. The only board characteristics that have a significant and positive impact on gaining and sustaining a competitive performance in terms of sustainable profit growth was the tenure or length of service that board members have provided to the company. All other characteristics do not have any significant and positive impact on the sustainable profit growth of the firm. This means that the members spend more years as board members, contributing to sustainable profit growth.
